What Is a No General Anesthesia Procedure aka Twilight Anesthesia?
General anesthesia has a number of potential side effects, including vomiting, nausea, weakness, and headaches. These issues may be present not just after the surgery but for several days following the procedure. General anesthesia may also increase swelling and bruising in the operative area.
Furthermore, general anesthesia can put considerable strain on a patient’s body and requires placement of a breathing tube. For patients who are concerned about the potential risks involved with general anesthesia, we offer procedures including our signature deep plane facelift under twilight intravenous (IV) anesthesia. With this modality, you are asleep and have no pain or memory during the procedure. It would feel the same as undergoing a colonoscopy or wisdom teeth removal.
Dr. Demetri is able to achieve excellent surgical results with our patients comfortable under twilight anesthesia!
Your Consultation
For patients who want procedures with no general anesthesia, scheduling a consultation is highly recommended. This will allow for examinations to determine if the goals of the patients will accommodate the option. The majority of our procedures are done WITHOUT general anesthesia.
Patients will be able to ask all the questions that they want during the consultation. They will be informed if the option without general anesthesia is suitable for them.
Your Anesthesia Options
The type of anesthesia used for procedures with no general anesthesia, and to what degree, will depend on the procedure itself. Certain procedures can be performed using local anesthesia, which numbs only a specific area. This type of anesthesia allows the patient to be awake and comfortable while not experiencing any pain.
Twilight anesthesia is our preferred option for patients who want to be asleep during the procedure. This is a very safe option that can reduce bruising and allows the patient to wake up shortly after stopping its administration.
After Your Procedure
The recovery period following procedures with no general anesthesia can vary. Local anesthesia can wear off after a few hours and be gone completely. Patients may still experience tingling for about a day.
One major benefit of avoiding general anesthesia has to do with getting home afterwards. After general anesthesia, patients cannot drive themselves home, since the aftereffects can impair driving ability. They must instead arrange for a ride home from a friend or a family member.
After a procedure involving local anesthesia, however, patients can typically drive themselves home with no issues. This makes many patients’ post-operative experience much easier.
